About Our School

Bayou View Elementary is a public school in Gulfport, Mississippi. We are a level 5 elementary school (Mississippi's highest level of accreditation) with more than 500 students in grades kindergarten through fifth . The school is located near a bayou and a little less than three miles from the beach. We also are near an airport which is just west of the school. Hurricane Katrina caused so much damage in our area that our school was closed from August 29 until October.

The Mississippi Gulf Coast

By: Rachel & Katherine

The Gulf Coast has a humid, moist climate and a 70-mile shoreline on the Gulf of Mexico. It is not a mountainous region, nor does it get very cold. Our city, Gulfport, is the second largest in our state. With beaches, casinos, restaurants, hotels and condominiums, the Coast was a popular tourist and retirement area, but is not as popular now because of the damage from Katrina. Three of our casinos have re-opened, although they are continuing to rebuild. Most of the other casinos are rebuilding.

Some of the many animals that make their homes on the Coast are seagulls, alligators, opossums, raccoons, hummingbirds, owls and bees. We have many trees including oaks, magnolias, pecans and numerous pines. Our state tree is the magnolia tree, and the state flower is the magnolia. The state bird is the mockingbird, the state land mammal is the white-tailed deer, and our state water mammal is the bottle-nosed dolphin.

Students painted a classroom bench with a mural showing local plants and animals.
