Snowstorms in NL
by Liam,Devin and Andrew
NL is a Moist Continental Mid-latitude Climates
Snowstorms occur every winter starting in November and lasting untill late April . Sometimes we have a storm on Mag weekend and we can't go camping . This is very disappointing in that we are looking forward to this, and have to change our plans. Snowstorms cause many problems for SIX months of the year in Newfoundland and Labrador. We have a longer winter season here that most provinces in Canada. Storms can be very powerful . We have had up to 50 cms in one day. We have set records for the most snowfall in two hours. We had 33cms in just two hours. A heavy snowfal warning can close the schools and create dangerous driving conditions. With so many hills in St. John's and Downtown houses and stores are built in the so close to the road we have problems with snow removal. y lon
When heavy snowstorms are accompanied with the winds over hundred kilometers per hour we have BLIZZARD conditions Sometimes we get warnings to stay off the highways and roadways. People often have accidents trying to get home from work. While the school children don't mind being off school and they certainly enjoy outside playing in the snow. Hockey,Ski-dooing, sliding, skiing, snowboarding, skating, building snowman and snowforts are some of the more popular winter sports. We have big winter carnival where we build and paint ice sculptures of different animals, cars, hockey teams etc.
While the coldest month is less than -20 degrees Celsius. The chances of losing your power is very high. Ice forms fast on your window so you can't see what is going on outside. You can lose your breath and you can slip on the ice.Sometimes you can't see your hand in font of your face.In 2006 we had one hundred 20 cm . Ice forms around your door and you can't get out of your house.Sometimes when snow is wet it will turn into ice.Icicles that are really thick can form in one day.In snowstorms like this some parts of the ocean can freeze over
Avalanches occur at Marble Mountian and Gross Morrne National Park. An avalanch can burry people and kill people. Ofen we have people go missing when they go ice fishing high in the mountains. Avalanches occur by snow buiding up and wind hitting or shifting the weight of the snow. Sometimes skiers are advised not to go on certain trails in that the trains can be too dangerous.
